Under Michael’s direction, HELIX Environmental Planning became an award-winning leader in environmental planning and natural resource sustainability. Having first joined the employee-owned company in 2001, he served as Chief Executive Officer from 2008 through June 2024 and shepherded HELIX into an era of growth and expansion.
For more than 30 years, Michael has been providing outstanding environmental consulting services to clients, drawing from a rich background that combines environmental science, human geography, economics, and engineering. His work encompasses water and wastewater conveyance, storage and treatment; transportation facilities (e.g., heavy rail, airport, highway, and transit); utility corridors (e.g., pipeline, transmission line, and outfall); military operations and construction projects, and coastal development.
After graduating with an engineering degree, Michael admits that he found his way into environmental planning essentially by accident: the “environmental” section directly followed “engineering” in his local newspaper’s Help Wanted listings. He never looked back.
Michael holds a bachelor’s degree in engineering from Dartmouth College, and a master’s in geography from San Diego State University. He is a member of the Association of Environmental Professionals, American Public Works Association, and American Society of Civil Engineers.
